Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick building with a hipped shingle roof, a white door and white-framed windows, fronted by a large asphalt parking area with sun glare, surrounded by green deciduous trees under a bright hazy sky.

On a repair call here, a contractor goes straight to the compressor and the contactor. Homes in Benton County, AR run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. Across those months, the compressor starts and stops every time the thermostat calls, the condenser fan runs through the heat of the day, and the contactor takes every one of those switching cycles. By the time a system fails, those parts have logged real wear. A contractor pricing a repair in this county prices it with that load already behind the equipment.

Interior of an empty single-car garage with concrete block walls, a closed sectional metal door, exposed wooden ceiling joists with large galvanized ductwork, an aluminum step ladder and a brown paper sack on the floor.

Much of the housing here was built at a point when central AC was already standard, so the ductwork, the electrical service, and the equipment share a common origin rather than a layered one. Half the homes in Benton County, Arkansas were built in 2001 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means when a system fails and a contractor pulls it open, the question is what the unit itself has become over its service life: which components have worn, whether the refrigerant circuit is intact, and whether the parts that particular system takes are still in the supply chain. The house is unlikely to be what complicates the repair.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, in gray and white tones on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it carries the compressor and the condenser coil. Those two components do the heaviest work in the system, so when the AC runs but cools poorly, or makes noise, or trips the breaker, a contractor starts here.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan. The evaporator coil is where the air actually cools as it passes through, and the blower pushes that air into the ducts. The refrigerant line set connects the two units, running between the outdoor pad and the indoor cabinet, and a fault anywhere along it can affect the whole system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific house and equipment.
