Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick house with a hipped shingle roof, white-framed windows and a dark front door, fronted by a large empty asphalt lot and flanked by dense green trees under a bright hazy sky.

A central AC compressor cycles on and off every time the house calls for cooling, and contactors take the electrical hit each time. Homes in Fulton County, AR run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. By late summer, a contactor that was borderline in June has logged enough starts to fail outright, which is usually what a contractor finds when a system goes down in August. Worn contacts, a compressor drawing high amperage, a condenser fan motor running hot: those are the failure points a repair call in this county turns up most.

Half the homes in Fulton County, Arkansas were built in 1986 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). For a repair job, that history shows up in the parts, not the labor. Systems running in houses built for an earlier generation of equipment often take components that manufacturers have narrowed, replaced, or stopped making entirely. A contractor opening a unit here has to confirm what the system actually requires before pricing the fix, because a part that fits the spec sheet and a part that is still manufactured are not always the same thing.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior rooms, ductwork running from an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it is where heat gets released to the open air. The compressor lives inside that cabinet and is the part a contractor reaches for early when a system stops cooling or starts making noise it should not make.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil, which is the indoor half of the refrigerant circuit and a common source of problems when airflow drops or the system ices over. The expansion valve and the refrigerant lines that run between the two cabinets round out the system, and a contractor checks both when the unit runs but the air coming out stays warm.

The drawing shows a typical central AC layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific house and setup.
