Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick ranch house with a low hipped shingle roof, white-trimmed windows and a central dark door, fronted by a large asphalt parking area with sun glare, surrounded by leafy green trees under a bright hazy sky.

The compressor in a central AC unit starts and stops every time the house calls for cooling, and that cycling is where the mechanical load actually lands. Homes in Ouachita County, AR run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. A contactor rated for a certain number of switching cycles burns through them faster here than in a county where summer ends early. Capacitors carry the startup surge every single time, and they degrade proportionally. A contractor diagnosing a failed start or a tripped breaker in this area looks at those components before anything else, because the season has already done the arithmetic on them.

Ductwork in a house that has stood this long has seen several systems come and go inside it, but the repair call is about what is inside the unit right now. Half the homes in Ouachita County, Arkansas were built in 1974 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a contractor opening a failed component has to confirm whether the replacement parts for that specific system are still in production before a repair scope can be set. If the line has been discontinued, the job changes. The age of the housing is not the variable that decides this; the age of the equipment and what its manufacturer still supports is.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway single-story building showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork and an air handler, connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it carries the compressor and the condenser coil. Both are common failure points. A compressor that has stopped pumping or a coil that is fouled or damaged will shut down the whole system, so a contractor goes there early.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan. The evaporator coil sits in the airstream above the furnace or in a dedicated cabinet, and a refrigerant line set runs between it and the outdoor unit. The expansion valve, which controls refrigerant flow into the evaporator, and the capacitors that start and run the motors are also points a contractor checks when diagnosing why a system has stopped cooling.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply and what condition they are in for your specific house.

Severe Weather Events in Ouachita County

Weather puts load on cooling equipment. The harder a system works to hold temperature through heat and pressure swings, the more stress its parts absorb over time, and repair needs in Ouachita County track closely with what the local climate demands.
