Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story brick ranch house with a shingled hip roof and dark front door, fronted by a wide asphalt driveway with sun glare, flanked by grass and leafy trees under a pale overcast sky.

Sizing a central AC system for a Hempstead County home starts with what the compressor is actually being asked to carry each year. Homes in Hempstead County, AR run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. That much runtime accumulates on the contactor, the condenser fan motor, and especially the compressor, the parts that cycle every time the system calls for cooling. A unit that is undersized runs longer cycles to keep up, and those extra start-stop events are where mechanical wear concentrates. A contractor doing a load calculation here is not filling out a form; they are setting the condition under which that compressor survives a full run of summers.

Ductwork in Hempstead County's older housing was sized and routed for equipment that is no longer in it, and what a contractor finds when they open up the runs determines how a new central AC installation actually prices and scopes. Half the homes in Hempstead County, Arkansas were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a fair share of the homes a contractor walks into here have supply and return layouts that do not match what a modern system needs. The electrical side carries a similar question, since service panels in houses of that age were not built to the load a new central unit draws. A contractor who quotes before checking both is working from assumptions the house may not support.

What a Central AC System Is Made Of

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually along a side wall or at the rear, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility space, basement, or closet and contains the evaporator coil along with the blower that moves air through the house.

The thermostat mounts on an interior wall where the homeowner sets and reads temperatures. A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the indoor coil, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the evaporator coil to a floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home.
