Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick building with a hipped shingle roof and several white-framed windows, fronted by a large empty asphalt lot with sun flare, surrounded by green trees under a bright hazy sky.

Sizing a central AC system for this house starts with what the compressor is actually being asked to carry each year. Homes in Boone County, AR run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. The condenser fan and contactor cycle through that full stretch alongside it, and a unit that is undersized starts falling behind on the hottest days when it has the least margin. A contractor running a load calculation here has to account for the house's envelope, its ductwork condition, and its heat gain before committing to a unit size, because an undersized install shows its flaw quickly under that kind of accumulated runtime.

Ductwork sized and sealed for the equipment that was running decades ago is what a contractor opens walls to find in a significant share of Boone County homes. Half the homes in Boone County, Arkansas were built in 1985 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A new central AC unit has specific airflow requirements, and ducts laid in for a different system may restrict return air, leak at the joints, or run in a configuration that leaves rooms under-served. The electrical service is a separate check. What those two findings produce is the actual scope of the installation, and the quote follows from them.

What a Central AC System Is Made Of

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with furniture and ceiling ductwork, connected to an outdoor condenser unit with a fan beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at the side or rear, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet, and works with the outdoor unit to pull heat from the air moving through your home.

The refrigerant line set runs between those two units, carrying refrigerant through insulated copper lines that pass through an exterior wall. A thermostat on an interior wall ties the whole system together, reading the air temperature in the house and signaling the equipment to run or stop.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.
