Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick ranch house with a low hipped roof, large picture windows and a central door, flanked by large leafy trees, with an empty asphalt lot in the foreground lit by low sun flare.

Sizing a central AC system for a Union County house means accounting for a compressor that cycles hard through a long stretch of heat with almost no downtime. Homes in Union County, AR run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. The contactor and capacitor take a start-and-stop load every day across those months, and a unit that is undersized for the house runs longer cycles to compensate, accelerating wear on exactly those parts. A contractor doing a load calculation here has to match equipment capacity to the actual structure, because the season does not give a marginal install anywhere to hide.

Ductwork laid in for one generation of equipment does not automatically carry the next. Half the homes in Union County, Arkansas were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor installing central AC in stock like this opens the crawlspace or the ceiling and finds out whether the existing runs are sized for a modern unit's airflow or whether they need to be reworked before the new system can perform correctly. That question, and what it costs to answer it, shapes the quote more than the equipment selection does. The electrical side follows the same logic: service panels in houses of this vintage were sized for loads that predate current central AC draws, and a contractor has to verify capacity before anything else gets priced.

What a Central AC System Is Made Of

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house interior showing ducted air handling equipment and duct runs through rooms, connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside the wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at grade level beside the foundation, and it holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside the house, the air handler or furnace sits in a utility space, basement, or closet and moves air across the evaporator coil. Those two pieces are the heart of the system.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, carrying refrigerant through insulated copper tubing from outdoors to the indoor coil and back. A thermostat on an interior wall ties the whole system together, reading the air temperature and telling the equipment when to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how these pieces come together in your home.

Severe Weather Events in Union County by Year

Extreme weather puts stress on cooling equipment, and how hard a system has to work over its life depends on what the local climate actually delivers. That makes installation sizing and equipment selection a local decision, not a generic one.
