Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Sizing a central AC system in Chicot County is not a calculation a contractor can borrow from a neighboring market and call close enough. Homes in Chicot County, AR run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor each cycle through that entire stretch, accumulating starts and stops on a schedule that leaves almost no idle time in the warmest half of the year. A unit that is even slightly undersized runs longer per cycle to keep up, and that added strain lands on the compressor first. A contractor quoting a new installation here has to run a proper load calculation for this house, this orientation, and this envelope before settling on equipment capacity.

Ductwork laid for a system that no longer exists rarely matches what a new central AC unit needs to push through it. Half the homes in Chicot County, Arkansas were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between what was built into these houses and what a contractor is now asked to connect to it is where an installation either runs clean or runs long. A contractor sizing a new system here has to assess those existing runs before a quote means anything, because a duct layout designed for earlier equipment can restrict airflow, force a redesign, or require new branch runs entirely. The electrical service gets the same look, since a panel that was adequate for whatever ran before may not carry the load a modern compressor draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house with the roof lifted, showing interior rooms, ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and houses the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic. Together these two units form the heart of the system a contractor puts in.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the indoor coil to the outdoor condenser through a pair of insulated copper lines. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. The condensate drain line runs from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows a representative layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what the installation requires for your specific house.

Severe Weather Events in Chicot County

Weather in this part of Arkansas puts real demands on cooling equipment: heat, humidity, and storm activity all shape how hard a system has to work and how long it holds up. Sizing and installing central AC here means accounting for local conditions, not just square footage.
